The Association of Science Laboratory Technologists of Nigeria (ASLTON), University of Maiduguri Branch, on 15 June 2026, officially held its 2026 Techno-Science Week with the opening of a three-day In-House Scientific Workshop at the El-Kanemi Hall, University of Maiduguri.
The workshop, which was centred on the theme “General Laboratory Techniques,” was designed to strengthen the technical competence of laboratory scientists, technologists, quality control personnel, researchers, and other laboratory professionals through practical, hands-on training sessions and expert presentations.
Speaking on the significance of the programme, the organizers noted that the workshop is aimed at promoting excellence in laboratory practice, enhancing research capacity, and reinforcing adherence to internationally accepted standards in laboratory operations, safety, and documentation.
The opening day’s programme focuses on Safety and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) as well as Measurement and Instrument Handling, equipping participants with essential knowledge and practical skills required for effective laboratory management and safe scientific investigations.
The scientific workshop also features keynote presentations by distinguished scholars. The first technical session examined “The Role of Technology in Research and Capacity Building with Emphasis on General Laboratory Techniques, Hazards, and Safety Practices,” delivered by Prof. Mustapha B. Abubakar, Director of the Biotechnology Centre of Excellence, North-East Zone, University of Maiduguri.
A second keynote session addressed “Cultivating Excellence in Science Laboratory Technology Orientation Towards Entrepreneurship,” presented by Prof. Umar Kyari Sandabe of the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Maiduguri.
The remaining days of the workshop provided intensive practical sessions on:
- Solution Preparation and Dilution Techniques
- Microscopy and Slide Preparation
- Sample Collection, Handling and Labelling
- Data Recording and Laboratory Documentation
The programme underscored ASLTON’s commitment to continuous professional development and the promotion of quality laboratory services within tertiary institutions and research environments.
The event is hosted by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Muhammed Laminu Mele, with the Registrar, Ahmad Alhaji Lawan, serving as host. Attendance includes laboratory scientists, science laboratory technologists, quality control managers, researchers, academic staff, students, and professionals from various laboratories across the region.
The 2026 ASLTON Techno-Science Week Workshop continued through 17 June 2026 at El-Kanemi Hall, University of Maiduguri, with participants gaining practical competencies that will improve laboratory efficiency, research quality, and workplace safety.
