Lagos, Nigeria – In a significant step towards strengthening Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) education and professional practice in Nigeria, the leadership of the Nigeria Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT) and the Association of Science Laboratory Technologists of Nigeria (ASLTON) paid a strategic courtesy visit to the management of Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo.
The high-level engagement was held at the University’s administrative headquarters, where the LASU management team was led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, alongside the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), the Registrar, and the Bursar.
The NISLT delegation was led by the Acting Director-General/Registrar/Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Peter A. Oluwafisoye, FISLT, and the National President of the Association of Science Laboratory Technologists of Nigeria (ASLTON), Mr. Ayotunde Omorilewa, FISLT, demonstrating the shared commitment of both to advancing laboratory science education, regulation, and professional standards in Nigeria.
Key Outcomes of the Meeting
The meeting was cordial, productive, and focused on strengthening collaboration between LASU, NISLT, and ASLTON in the interest of Science Laboratory Technology education and the profession.
Commitment to Full Compliance in SLT Programme Administration
One of the major highlights of the meeting was the discussion on the Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) programme currently being offered by Lagos State University. The University Management reaffirmed its commitment to aligning the programme with the statutory requirements of the regulatory body and expressed its readiness to take the necessary steps to ensure full compliance with all professional and regulatory standards.
Recognition of NISLT Professional Licence in LASU Scheme of Service
Another significant outcome was the agreement to initiate the necessary administrative process for incorporating the NISLT professional licence into the University’s Scheme of Service. The proposal will be presented for approval by the University’s Governing Council, thereby institutionalising professional recognition and ensuring its permanent inclusion within the University’s employment framework.
This development is expected to strengthen professional standards and provide greater recognition for licensed Science Laboratory Technologists within the institution.
Approval for the Establishment of an ASLTON Branch
The University Management also agreed to support the establishment of an ASLTON Branch within Lagos State University. The new branch will provide a platform for professional networking, continuous capacity building, advocacy, and the promotion of ethical laboratory practice among Science Laboratory Technologists in the institution.
Strategic Collaboration for Laboratory Development
Both parties further explored opportunities for sustained collaboration between LASU, NISLT, and ASLTON in promoting excellence in laboratory services, research, innovation, and manpower development.
A major aspect of the collaboration is the University’s commitment to engaging licensed Science Laboratory Technologists in its laboratories, thereby ensuring that laboratory operations are managed by qualified and professionally regulated personnel in accordance with national standards.

The visit represents another milestone in the ongoing efforts of NISLT and ASLTON to promote professionalism, improve the quality of laboratory services, and strengthen institutional partnerships across Nigeria’s higher education sector.
