The Acting Director-General/Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT), Dr. Peter Adefisoye Oluwafisoye, FISLT, mnip, has called for the reintroduction of the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) Degree Programme in Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) at the University of Ibadan, describing the institution as the pioneer of Science Laboratory Technology education in Nigeria.
Dr. Oluwafisoye made the appeal on Friday, 17 July 2026, during a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Oyebode Adebowale, where discussions centred on the development and advancement of Science Laboratory Technology education and professional practice in Nigeria.
The NISLT Acting Director-General noted that the University of Ibadan holds a unique and historic position in the development of the Science Laboratory Technology profession in the country, having pioneered the former Laboratory Technology Training School (LTTS) programme, which produced numerous distinguished professionals who have contributed significantly to laboratory science, research, education, industry, and national development.
Reflecting on his personal academic and professional journey, Dr. Oluwafisoye disclosed that he was a proud product of the University’s former LTTS programme. He acknowledged that the quality of education and practical laboratory exposure he received at the University of Ibadan provided a strong foundation for his subsequent career in laboratory science, academia, research, management, and public service.
He further recalled that he spent approximately ten years serving in the Department of Physics, University of Ibadan, before joining Osun State University in 2007 and later proceeding to the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology, where he currently serves as Acting Director-General/Registrar/Chief Executive Officer.
According to him, his training and professional experiences at the University of Ibadan equipped him with the technical competence, professional discipline, and managerial capacity that have continued to shape his career and contributions to the development of the laboratory profession.
Dr. Oluwafisoye therefore appealed to the University Management to consider the commencement of a full-fledged undergraduate degree programme in Science Laboratory Technology. He stressed that such a programme would contribute significantly to the production of highly competent and professionally grounded Laboratory Technologists and Scientists capable of meeting national and international standards.
He observed that more than 20 Nigerian universities currently offer degree programmes in Science Laboratory Technology in accordance with the National Universities Commission (NUC) Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS), while the University of Ibadan, which pioneered laboratory technology education in Nigeria, does not currently run the undergraduate degree programme.
Vice-Chancellor Receives NISLT Delegation
Receiving the delegation, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Oyebode Adebowale, warmly welcomed the NISLT Acting Director-General and his team. The delegation also included the Chairperson of the Association of Science Laboratory Technologists of Nigeria (ASLTON), University of Ibadan Branch, Dr. Joel Elizabeth, FISLT.
Professor Adebowale acknowledged the significant role of Science Laboratory Technology in advancing scientific research, innovation, healthcare, industry, and national development. He noted that the University of Ibadan already runs postgraduate programmes in the discipline and expressed optimism that the introduction of an undergraduate degree programme in Science Laboratory Technology was a feasible proposition.
The Vice-Chancellor also reflected on the historical circumstances surrounding the discontinuation of the former programme and assured the delegation that the University Management would give the proposal careful and positive consideration, subject to the University’s established procedures and academic priorities.
ASLTON Chairperson Commends Vice-Chancellor’s Support
In her remarks, the Chairperson of ASLTON, University of Ibadan Branch, Dr. Joel Elizabeth, FISLT, expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for his continued support for the Association and for providing an enabling environment for its professional and academic activities.
Dr. Elizabeth particularly thanked the Vice-Chancellor for approving and supporting the recently concluded ASLTON University of Ibadan Chapter Scientific Workshop, themed “Effective Management Skills for Improved Laboratory Operations and Quality Service.” She described the Vice-Chancellor’s support and commitment as instrumental to the success of the programme.
Presentation of NISLT Establishment Act
As a symbolic highlight of the courtesy visit, Dr. Oluwafisoye presented the Vice-Chancellor with a copy of the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (Establishment) Act No. 12 of 2003, which established NISLT as the statutory regulatory body for the Science Laboratory Technology profession in Nigeria.
The presentation underscored the importance of strengthening institutional collaboration and promoting greater awareness of the statutory and professional framework governing Science Laboratory Technology practice in the country.
The courtesy visit reaffirmed the shared commitment of the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT), the University of Ibadan, and the Association of Science Laboratory Technologists of Nigeria (ASLTON) to strengthening Science Laboratory Technology education, advancing professional standards, and developing highly skilled laboratory professionals capable of contributing meaningfully to scientific innovation, technological advancement, and sustainable national development.
